Category A Membership

Category A membership is available to Chartered Physiotherapists with at least two years full time post-registration clinical experience of physiotherapy within the human field, who have through supervised clinical training and/or postgraduate qualification demonstrated competence in the administration of physiotherapy to animals.

Current category A members are eligible to apply for the ACPAT Block Insurance Scheme.

Category A members working exclusively with animals are not required to be HPC registered.

This category is restricted to residents of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man who meet the following:

Criteria 1 (valid from 1 January 2006)

  • Obtained the PG Dip or MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy from the Royal Veterinary College (University of London).

Criteria 2 (valid prior to 31 December 2005)

  • Obtained the PG Dip in Veterinary Physiotherapy from the Royal Veterinary College (University of London).
  • Successfully completed the first eighteen months of the MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy from the Royal Veterinary College (University of London).

Criteria 3 (valid from 1 January 2005)

Criteria 4 (valid prior to 31 December 2004)

  • Attended 4 days of ACPAT courses and one other course (either human or animal) in a two year period. 4 days of ACPAT courses and 1 ACPAT seminar (2 days) plus 2 days of CPD courses recognised by ACPAT.
  • Obtained references from 2 Veterinary Surgeons.
  • Successfully completed the ACPAT Continuous Assessment Record Book (CARB).
  • Have completed questionnaire on treatment regimes.

Working overseas

Category A members wishing to practice overseas on a temporary basis must first contact their insurance broker and obtain extended cover as necessary.

There is no need to amend the ACPAT Membership Category unless you intend to practice overseas for a period of more than 12 months.
