2008 ACPAT Spring Seminar Review - Saturday cont.

Equine Day
Chris Saunders BVSc MRCVS opened the afternoon session with a Vets Perspective on
Neurological Assessment. Chris is a partner of Sound Equine, an exclusive Equine
Practice looking after non-professional competition horses and polo ponies. He has
a specific interest in lameness and foot balance in particular.
Mr Saunders took
us through a subjective and objective equine neurological assessment including evaluation
of motor function and illustrated some of the more common neurological conditions.
This led nicely into Dr Narelle Stubbs second lecture, Core Stability and Proprioception
in the horse Dr Stubbs illustrated the effective use of the horses’ sensory feedback
system (mechanoreceptive and proprioceptive) in rehabilitation and performance enhancement.
She presented theoretical concepts supported
by evidence based research. A reminder
of the anatomy of equine core muscles was achieved by the use of slides of equine
dissection, thankfully at a sufficiently long interval following lunch. We were
shown functional proprioceptive techniques using jangles, taping and theraband.
For those lucky enough to be attending Dr Stubbs workshop on Monday 17th March,
the lecture certainly wetted the appetite.
The day closed with another chance to
visit the trade stands. It was interesting to note that apart from those with planes
and trains to catch, ACPAT members stayed around chatting and socializing at the
end of the day. A sure sign that a great day had been had by all thanks to the hard
work of the ACPAT course organisers of which their efforts in making the day a success
were in evidence throughout.
