2007 ACPAT Spring Seminar Review - cont
<<Back
“Louder than Shouting” started Sundays Seminar with some very interesting strategies
set out by Sloan Hickman Dip CD Sloan Consultants in order to effectively market
our services. Sloan was a very informative speaker and I’m sure each of us picked
at least one part of his presentation to try out in reality!
The rest of the morning was filled with captivating presentations from Dr.Gianluigi
Giovagnoli DVM PhD and finished before lunch with a review of research undertaken
by Vicky Spalding MCSP MSc Vet Phys ACPAT Category A. “An Investigation into the
Relationship between Hind Limb Lameness and Alteration of Epaxial Muscle Tone in
Horses”. There is little research to confirm the relationship between lameness and
secondary back pain in the horse. Vicky’s research is pioneering – hopefully something
future MSc students may consider taking forward?!
Dr.Gianluigi Giovagnoli discussed the impact of transport to the horse and highlighted
the stress areas that are involved and how physiotherapy can help. He went on to
feedback on research undertaken on the “Muscular Activity of the Horse Jumping”.
His research considered the dorsal muscular chain and essential extensors required
whilst jumping and concluded with demonstration through electromyography (EMG) data
collection and their syncronisation with video images, the muscular sequence involved.
Dr Tim Mair BVSc PhD DEIM DESTS DipECEIM MRCVS and Dr Emmanuel Engeli Dr med vet
DVM MRCVS Diplomate ACVS Diplomate ECVS were the first two speakers after lunch
on Sunday, producing interesting and enlightening information on “Therapy for Foot
Injuries Diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)” and “The Role of Scintigraphy
in Equine Lameness”. Both of these presentations highlighted the importance of a
confirmed diagnosis in order to facilitate the most appropriate treatment and management
plan for our clients.
The weekend concluded with a report on Cold Spa Hydrotherapy by Gillian Copland
MCSP ACPAT Category A. She discussed the impact that the equine spa has on lower
limb injuries, its method of use and how this is related to current cryotherapy
research.
A big thank you to the sponsors of the weekend: SKF Services Ltd and to the additional
exhibitors: Blackwell Book Services, Equissage and Magnet Medics.
Utmost appreciation and thanks however must go to the organisers of the weekend.
The venue was perfect and supplemented course notes were invaluable.
Overall a thoroughly smooth-running, informative and highly enjoyable event.
