Upgrade Routes

To become an ACPAT category A member you must have completed either a PG Dip / Msc in Veterinary Physiotherapy at either The University of Liverpool or Hartpury College.
Both courses require participants to have obtained a BSc(Hons) or MSc in Physiotherapy prior to enrolment and be registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). You will also need to be registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) if currently working in the human field.
Please note that both courses have differing entry requirements and application processes, please contact them directly for the most up to date details (see below).

Upon completion of the course you can then apply directly for full ACPAT Category A membership (fees apply). All students of the Liverpool and Hartpury programmes are encouraged to join ACPAT as Category B Student members (fees apply).

As of the ACPAT AGM in March 2008, the previous stipulation for two years post graduation clinical experience prior to upgrading to a Category A physiotherapist has been removed.

Hartpury University PG Dip/ Msc Veterinary Physiotherapy

These two part-time postgraduate programmes are available to Chartered Physiotherapists who are looking to specialise in animals. The Postgraduate Diploma is a two year part-time programme and the Master of Science Degree is a three year part-time programme. Graduates from these programmes will be able to upgrade from Category B membership of ACPAT to Category A and gain RAMP registration.

Once qualified, students will be eligible to set up their own business in veterinary physiotherapy or be employed in the industry. To support this topics studied on both these programmes include Clinical Practice, Comparative and Applied Anatomy Physiology and Biomechanics, Understanding Veterinary Diagnostics and Physiotherapy Assessment, Research Methods, Applied Business Management and Veterinary Physiotherapy Rehabilitation.
Students studying the three year MSc will also be able to complete their own research and explore their own interests by undertaking a postgraduate dissertation in the third year.

The course is offered on a part-time basis with teaching delivered in ‘blocks’ of study (each block is usually between two and four days in length. There
are approximately 10 blocks of attendance per year) on both weekdays and weekends.
